Unlike single-family homes, residents transition from the exterior world to their private dwellings through a common lobby and extensive hallway. These in-between spaces act as a roji, the Japanese term for a small garden or path, traditionally leading to a temple or a sacred space.
The Living Spaces
The private apartments are fluid spaces subject to the individual residents’ response to their space. Function, shaped by the user, extends to the roof deck, where furniture is adaptable to various circumstances. It is through the exploration of the in-between that Bickams Lane Flats borrows the experience of being in urban nature.
